Tuohy Wins New York State Title By 25 Seconds; Fayetteville-Manlius Sweeps Class A

By Mary Albl of DyeStat

It was a snowy, cold and winter-like atmosphere for the NYSPHSAA Cross Country Championships on Saturday in North Country at SUNY Plattsburgh.

But for North Rockland’s Kateyln Tuohy, it was business as usual. Ranked No. 1 all fall, Tuohy ran to her third straight New York Class A title, winning the 2.88-mile race in 15 minutes, 36.5 seconds. Tuohy was the only female runner to clock under 16 minutes on the day.

The Class A team race was another chapter in the Fayetteville-Manlius and Saratoga Springs rivalry. Led by senior Claire Walters’ runner-up finish (16:01.8), Fayetteville-Manlius placed four runners in the top 15 to score 34 points and reclaim the title from Saratoga Springs (40 points). A year ago, Saratoga Springs defeated F-M by one point.

The Fayetteville-Manlius boys made it a program sweep, scoring 42 points and repeating as Class A champs. Junior Peyton Geehrer was the top finished for F-M, clocking 14:35.5 for second place. The team had three runners in the top five. The individual winner was Warwick Valley senior Behailu Bekele-Arcuri in 14:32.7.

Pittsford Mendon senior Sam Lawler ran the fastest time of the day for the boys, winning the Class B title in 14:26.1. Burnt-Hills narrowly repeated as team champions, edging out Pittsford Mendon, 44-49.

Senior Sarah Connelly of Mount Sinai defended her Class B title in 16:47.1, while the East Aurora girls scored 50 points to win the team crown.

The boys Class C title was once again a dominant showing by Saranac Lake, placing three runners in the top eight to score 28 points and repeat. Skaneateles junior Caleb Bender clocked 14:41.6 to win the individual title.

It was a close race for the Class C girls title as Camden won 75-77 over reigning champion, Greenwich. Camden was led by sophomore Lizzie Lucason’s first-place finish in 16:51.6.

Shelter Island senior Karl Lewis ran the second fastest time of the day in route to another Class D title, winning in 14:28.1. The team title was claimed again by Beaver River with an impressive 26 points, going 2-3-4.

Tully junior Brooke Rauber, ranked No. 10, won her fourth Class D title, covering the 3-mile course in the second-fastest time of the day for any girl, winning in 16:01.2. In the team race, only seven points separated first place from third, as Delhi won with 50 points. Maple Grove was second (55) and Tully was third (57).
