Saratoga Springs Sweeps Class A Titles For First Time In 18 Years By Keenan Gray of DyeStat For the first time since 2005 and third time overall, Saratoga Springs completed a sweep of the boys and girls team titles at the New York State Championships on Saturday at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill High School, with the girls winning a third consecutive title and the boys winning on a tiebreaker. Emily Bush, a Providence commit, held off defending Class A champion Zariel Macchia of William Floyd for the individual title by a margin of 17:34.3 to 17:44.3 to lead the Blue Streaks to an 18th state title in program history. Bush, along with teammates Alycia Hart (18:35.1, fourth) and Anya Belisle (18:47.8, seventh), finished in the top 10 to lead Saratoga past Northport 24-80, with Kate Turner (19:26.5, 24th) and Tong Ang (19:44.1, 35th) rounding out the scoring. After a 58-58 tie, the Saratoga boys took the tiebreaker over Monroe-Woodbury with Jacob Bend finishing 46th ahead of Monroe-Woodbury’s fifth and sixth runners, clinching the program’s first state title since 2012 and fifth overall. Thomas Isenovski led Saratoga, running 16:26.7 for 17th place, with Owen Blaisdell finishing 29th in 16:41.3, Darren Pasek running 16:43.8 and Luke Dacey running 16:45.1 to place 31st and 32nd, respectively, and Cooper Brandriss earning 39th in 16:51. Monroe-Woodbury put three in the top 20, including Oliver Jibb finishing sixth in 16:12.7. Nolan McGinn of Fayetteville-Manilus won the boys Class A individual crown in 15:48.7, the fastest time of the day. William Tempest of Sutherland and Sophia McInnes of Bayport Blue Point won their respective Class B individual titles, with Tempest taking the boys race in 16:09.3 and McInnes winning the girls race in 18:00.5. Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake defeated Manhasset 53-65 for the boys title, while Sayville took down Cornwall Central 41-53 for the girls title. Emilia O’Leary won the Class C individual girls title in 18:42.7, guiding East Aurora to the team title over Adirondack 22-77 with four girls finishing in the top 10 individually. East Aurora won the boys title as well, defeating Bronxville 49-86, with James Tette of Penn Yan Academy winning the individual title in 16:13.5. South Lewis’ Brynn Benard won her third Class D individual girls title, running 18:56 and led the Falcons to a team title, defeating Mount Academy 53-69. Pine Plains fended off South Lewis for the boys title 38-58, with Van Furman from Tri-Valley Central taking the individual title in 15:58.3. The Federation Championships are next weekend.
